So after getting lots of emails from my most recent job posting on Creative Hotlist, and the incredible disappointment of having 99% of the applicants clearly not even reading the ad - I figured why not give it a shot by posting the ad here.
Please! Absolutely No Design Firms, No Art Directors, and No one who is over-qualified. Sorry to be blunt about it but this job is what it is: A lot of production.
Here we go!

-----------------------------------------

Work for the Creative Director of Advertising & Marketing at a major jewelry company & a private boutique design studio in New York City.

I’m currently in search a good Production Artist / Graphic Designer with strong skills in Print Production and Website Design.

I specifically have new projects coming up for HTML based websites, Flash animation, and traditional print publishing.

Key skills that make a qualified candidate are: 1. A good designer's portfolio that is online. 2. Skilled use of Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver & Flash. 3. Being able to follow specific directions.

Work may be performed on-site and off-site, so candidates with a home studio set-up should make note of that when applying.

Candidates must be skilled, creative, motivated and willing to learn.

A "brief" cover letter and a resume are required as well.

There are NO Art Director positions available at this time.

BFA or equivalent degree required with a background in art & design.

NY City metro area resident only. No phone calls please. No calls from recruiters or staffing companies please.

Thanks for listening.

Mebbe I have a thing against BFA's since I don't have one myself. :)

Glad it is working out.

Things are working out pretty well with my new employee ...so far. I wonder why someone would think a BFA is a harsh requirement, I don't agree with that. To me its the basic standard, and I had plenty of qualified candidates applying for the gig. I think I made a good choice.

My experience is experience is the best qualification for production artists. Steal someone who is working at a prepress shop, a lot of them are killing for a chance to get out. My only concern is asking for Print and Web production experience is a tough one. I understand the smaller shop need for diversity, but that's a lot to ask of one person. I am sure they are out there, good luck.

That all depends on the cha-ching. And it makes sense to always start by requiring a BFA level -- all about supply and demand, and if there are resumes for this with BFAs, then good for the hiring party. If you don't get resumes, then you can always knock out that requirement, but err on the side of being the supply for demand.

Eh - the BFA requirement already puts it into art director range... and out of entry level IMO.

But - I'll keep my ears open to kids I know in the area and pass along the request.
