The dumbest not-for-profit marketing gaffe ever

I was reading a newsletter from an ill-named organization called "Friends of the Earth". I think their mission is great. I don't see how they could possibly accomplish anything of substance given their supposed budgeting of 80% to programs, 10% to general administration and 10% to fundraising...But, that's only a small part of the store.

I couldn't make this up..Well, I might have been able to, but I didn't. This organization—Friends of the Earth, chose ABSOLUTELY the wrong domain name and acronym for their organization. They want people to write to donate@foe.org.

FRIENDS @ foe.org???? You CAN'T be serious. What the hell kind of brainless moron oversaw that one? FOTE.ORG wasn't available? HOw about friendsofearth.org?? ANYTHING but the OPPOSITE of what you purport to be!!!!

When I was a kid, growing in the bosom of the Orthodox Jewish community in Northern New Jersey, we heard the legend of an acronym that's as bad as foe.org. The Scarsdale Hebrew Academy of Torah went as far as having stationery made up on which they were to launch their final appeal for funds to open the school..before a board member realized the acronym was a highly inappropriate one.

I suggest that FOE.ORG put a higher percentage of their opearting budget into fundraising.

Are other people that stupid? Does anyone have any cool stories about that sort of thing? I could use a laugh about that sort of thing right now. Thanks.

Well..I happen to be a member of Experts-Exchange. Their primary domain name now includes the hyphen..But ExpertSexChange is still a good idea. Would you want an amateur performing yours? Go to the Pros, I always say...I say it out of context occasionally, which is one of many things that kept me out of the really good schools.

Huh. It works when I cut and paste it, but the auto-linker seems to be messing it up. Try this one? www.cfo.com/article.cfm/3000717

Could you please try that URL again? I'm not sure that's a valid URL. Thanks.

That's pretty damned funny. This isn't an acronym, but another great example of a decidedly safe, non-confrontational marketing campaign going horribly, horribly wrong: http://www.cfo.com/article.cfm/30007...
