So I'm watching Family Guy this evening (9PM EST) and Star Wars was integrated into the television show at the end. I watched two other shows yesterday and saw some sort of plot-integration. I turn anywhere and there is some resemblance of Star Wars....they are really promoting the heck out of this new release....I'm not a fan of Star Wars but all of this advertising is getting to me. Anyone else see them?

but seriously, the true crime out of all of this? the untimely resurgence of such hit albums like "Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk" "Star Wars: Cocktails In The Cantina" and the ever popular "Christmas In The Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album" http://www.amazon.com/exec/o...

I read today that Lucas gave up $500,000 of his pay check for the first Star Wars in order to use the money for special effects development. What he received in return? Complete ownership and rights to all Star Wars movies and marketing. $500,000 for a few billion dollars...I'd say he made out okay.

That's market saturation for ya. Or is it permeation? Sounds toxic.

So I guess shouting "Kirk Over Skywalker!" here may not be a smart thing to do?

And to make it even worse, I'm watching Entertainment Tonight last night and they tell me to guess which legendary Hollywood director is celebrating his XXth birthday today...Star Wars creator George Lucas. He even timed his birthday to coincide with the hype. One day before I die I am going to look back and decide what was the biggest deal in all my years (business, arts, society, just life), and the whole Star Wars phenomenon is going to have to rank up around the top. It started when I was in high school, after all. I'm used to it because I have lived most of my life now with Star Wars hype...it is in fact a PART of life. So I guess I have just come to expect it, that other stuff has to get the hell out of the way if another Star Wars movie is coming up. It's bigger than most things we like to think are important...really is.

The last 2 movies have been extremely disappointing. I recall vividly seeing the first one (I had a crush on R2D2) and the "prequels" were soooo bad I just gave up on the magic coming back. This one is supposed to be good, which may be the reason that the hype and marketing is EVERYWHERE! This is where we all find out how Darth Vadar got his start..... should be good... and if not, it's pretty much over for the series anyway!

Totally agree Capers. I didn't see the last movie, was curious about it and can't seem to find it. It's hard to take Darth too seriously when you see him in the Pepsi commericial and some other scenarios. But I am getting a few laughs out of the Chewbaca Voice Over studio session - can't recall the name of the advertiser so I'm not so sure that's working. "May the popcorn be with you..."

Darren, i agree the hype is incredible, here is a link to an article i was this morning looking at the marketing, http://channels.netscape.com/ns/news... Very impressive. one side note- I went to three stores yesterday to buy a copy of the movie that is supposed to precede this one, I forget the name, but anyway- I saw very little signage or any type of promotion for the previus movies, Seems like to me that they would be hyping and stocking up on all of the movies, But everywhere I went they were gone. I talked to a couple of store managers and not one of them had thought to stock up or do any promotions for the old films, I think the marketing people missed an opportunity here.

I find myself kind of affected by all the hype as well. Also I can tell how close this prequel is in time to the ones I've seen so that kind of bolsters my curiosity as well.

"Luke, I am your father.... Luke, I am your cousin..."

Yep. Lucas isn't a filmmaker, he's always been a businessman. And a damned good one, too.
