Is Ebay safe?

I would like to take an Adholes pole to see how many of you have purchased items on Ebay and what your personal experience was. There are thousands of transactions completed daily, and Ebay boasts a 99.99% satisfaction rate from all transactions. Has anyone here had a fantastic or horrific transaction story? Is purchasing on Ebay really any less safe than purchasing from an online retailer?

On a fun note, check out this (REAL) guy's comments he likes to leave to his buyers/sellers. Pretty funny!

I've had mostly great experiences there. I usually use e-bay to find things I can't find elsewhere. Everything from out-of-date software to old CDs/albums...I even got a weird Hello Kitty thing from there and a Britney Spears doll that I thought was going to be Britney Spears Barbie. I know someone whose favorite food is Pop Tarts..so I figured, since everyone brings her pop tarts, I'd bring her a pop TART. She wasn't that amused. <>..But I got it on e-bay. I'll bet they have some real, old stale kellogg's Pop Tarts there. Yuck.

I've done hundreds of transaction on eBay, and I've had one bad experience with a guy threatening me after I was slow to ship his stupid junk. The cops got involved, but in the end, he got what he deserved, and I got my cash.

I've used eBay for over what... 8 years or more now? I never had any bad experience. I guess its a matter of researching the sellers and items before you just "bid." I've been turned onto trading and selling computer parts on anandtech.com, though. It's much more fun haggling.

I've bought probably close to 200 things on eBay and had only one problem -- it was after 9/11 and I was buying a nice American flag. Never got it. The woman apparently scammed a lot of folks, but after a little paperwork I got partially reimbursed by eBay. Despite all my good experiences, I would still be a little hesitant about dropping a lot of money (in the thousands, for example). Generally speaking, eBayers are good folks.

I got burned once, but that was like out of 100 transactions. Just be aware of your seller, make sure they have positive feedback and ask questions. It can be extremely useful!

I got burned once. It was a digital camera at a really great price. Very long story short, the woman did it to get quick cash for an abortion. Usually when I finance abortions, I get to know the person a bit better first.

I have never had a problem personally and I have bought many things off ebay. Just have heard a few horror stories and wanted to see what you all had to say. Jon, had no idea about the suits against paypal, good to know.

I'm pretty cautious about what I buy and from whom, and I've never had a problem. One of my old co-workers used to buy Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks like they were going out of style. She had a couple of problems with one dealer who was selling knock-offs, but once she found a supplier she could trust, she probably bought a pair or two a month. Seems like that's the way to go - finding a seller you trust.

I almost had a problem, but it got solved once the lady checked her paypal acct. The funniest thing I've ever heard was this one guy put up a totally bogus item. Took the guys money, but didn't ship (told him "you can't prove you never got it"). Unfortunately for him, he messed with a vengeful guy who got the sellers address and phone number and did things like post garage sales (early birds welcome), personal ads and other stuff I can't remember. Needless to say, after a few weeks of this, he apologized and sent the guy his money back.

bought a few vintage cameras and assorted crap, and sold one old cell phone. Used Paypal - never had a problem really... I always tried to buy from reputable sellers (either somebody I bought from before, or a store with an ebay outlet - or at least somebody with a good record and good feedback).

MLB.com Auctions is safe...you can bid on a game-used rubber and some other cool stuff.

I bid successfully on a pair of $350 black Mukluks last November. The seller was based in the hinterlands of Alberta and she had a nightmare figuring out how to get a wire transfer from me, but other than that (and the fact that the woman I bought them for was another golddigging user beeyotch) it was just fine. Scoping out Jags at eBay Motors now and there are some sweet bids for XK8.

Never had a problem with the 'Bay. Have had a problem whereby some of the software I purchased was a flat-out copy, but a few quick phonecalls to the manufacturers assured me that yeah, they may be copies, but since I called in first, the registration was mine. Muahahahahaha! Take that copiers!

I have not used Ebay myself, but I used to work with a woman who was a regular user of Ebay. She said that she usually didn't have a problem with it. However, I remember one time she said that she bought a purse through Ebay, and once she got it, she noticed it reeked of marijuana. She could not get the smell out. That was one horror story of Ebay that she experienced. I guess it could've been worse.

I had an ebay business for awhile, and I've also bought stuff on ebay. It is safe enough if you take precautions, like use a credit card and buy from reputable sellers. Imho the problem is with ebay itself, that has no incentive to combat the fraud. They collect fees on buyers and sellers regardless of what happens, and designed their system to be prohibitive if you need to request a credit. Paypal is even worse, one day they're going to get busted by the Feds for acting like a bank when they aren't one. Have you seen how many class action lawsuits are pending against them?
