by Preeti Jalan & Alicia Tan ‘Its name supposedly originated from the Moby Dick novel, characterized as Moby Dick’s first friend, Starbucks the coffee chain is a far cry from playing the supporting role in the coffee industry.’ Every street you walk along, it’s laden with not just one, but probably three or four Starbucks cafes. Everyday, some five new outlets pop up, and at the rate of expansion, their target of 40 000 outlets does not seem too far-fetched. This US$29 billion multinational coffee business had its humble beginning as a small coffee bean retailer with a shop situated at Pike Place in Seattle. Entrepreneur Howard Schultz had the keen foresight of turning Starbucks into a café after gaining inspiration from a trip to Milan, witnessing their avid coffee culture. Many thought his suggestion was absurd, but he pushed forth with his idea. And, well as they say, the rest is history.
