The little things

I have what some might call...a situation. Of the social variety. Tomorrow is a mixed bag of events:

Starting off with the usual: Professional Selling followed up with Distribution.

Later in the evening, possibly attend a presentation by AmEx on why we should follow up a career with them.

Afterwards, social event with the class (in other words, we're all going out to the bar to get to know each other outside of class).

This puts me in a funny situation, not to mention a stupid one.

What to wear?

Stop snickering. Stop it.

I have to figure out how to balance a wardrobe that suits the casual classroom atmosphere, the corporate career-trawling event, and an as-yet-undetermined bar in downtown Toronto.

Fortunately, I do have a window between school and AmEx to zip home and change a little, or I could even skip the AmEx thing (though any chance at networking or snagging an internship is advised to be taken). So far, I'm thinking I toss on a golf shirt (also known as a polo, it depends on how hip you are), and that becomes standard. I could do jeans or cargos for class, then switch it up to some low-key slacks or some black jeans. I think what I'm getting at here is, how do I find that line between business-casual and hip-20-something and perform a balancing act on it?

Would you believe I used to take an anti-fashion approach to my wardrobe?

I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh, and before I forget, thanks to Michael Iva for the comment on the last post :) I can't guarantee I'll be good at replying to comments from people (still getting the hang of this), but know that every one of them will be appreciated.

Ha ha, that's a popular question for me, believe me ;) No, I'm not, but I wish I was. That would be pretty awesome.

The answer to your dilemma in my mind is layers. Start with a spiffy looking polo shirt or short sleeved button shirt and a nice dark washed jean (this will be great for class and at the bar). Add a complimentary v-neck sweater over the casual button shirt and you'd look quite smart for the client meeting (if you were still going). In general, dressing like you actually care about your apperance makes a huge difference. Most of the men I work with look like they haven't bathed in 3 days--on purpose. Yuck.

I like that line, never heard it before. Heh, the point seems to have become moot; I won't be attending the AmEx thing, so looking good in front of a potential employer has been taken out of the equation, leaving me with my basic bargoing attire. Which works just fine for me :)

Be considerate of the blind. Do not wear deodorant. Let everyone get to know the real you.

Not a bad idea, we just got an H&M in the nearest mall. Thanks!

I've had the same problem for years and have kind of fallen into buying the shabbiest clothes at Club Monaco or the nicest clothes at H&M. It kind of gives you a formal look but with good colors, and interesting style. For special occasions, of course.
