I think my weblog didn't post, so I'll try it again. I purchased a few books that members had suggested in my previous blog, so I have my fingers crossed that they will all be good reads.

There is this sheer curiousity in me that might very well kill my cat. Seeing as I dont have a cat, it'll be a win win situation either way.

For all you members out there, how do you get your creative engine started? After a long weekend of rock and rolling, what do you do to clear the cobwebs that help you think conceptually and creatively, both in terms of copy and art.

I know that everyone needs their own niche...I was wondering what yours was!

Zany Brainy *EDGY* (advertising word of the year) tactics are MORE than welcome. Come one come all!

i really feel like I've got no conscious involvement in my 'creativity', I just happen to be able to channel some pretty f'd up thoughts. So, what works for me is to put on some electronic music and just free write. whatever comes out, goes down on the page. no judging, just vomit on a page.

I'm with Susan. I have an old set of wooden building blocks that I play with as I'm thinking and sketching.

I also grab a tape recorder and go for a drive.

Or a digital camera, notebook, and go for a walk outside.

Or solve a few go problems - for some reason the thought process I go through in reading out a tesuji problem often helps me see an advertising problem from a different angle.

I've heard this repeated a few times, and based on peresonal experience, I think it might be true. But people say that working with your hands helps your brain to work better. So, a lot of times when I'm concepting and I get stuck, I find that working a hunk of play-doh or fiddling with things like a slinky or other manipulate-able toys really helps ideas flow more easily. It's almost like the brain needs to give your hands something to do so it can use its energy to think up new ideas. Overall, you'll find more ideas flow when you're relaxed and almost in like "play" mode. As for where the ideas come from. You need to first stock up your mental stash. See, hear, and do as many varied things as you can. Then your brain will have things to pull from later.

I think one of my creative assets has been, over the years, learning how to push my own buttons. I had a lot more energy when I was younger, so after working a 12 hour shift at BBDO and commuting to Long Island 2 hours each way, I somehow had enough time and energy to work on my portfolio. Now, when running a business my creative moments are more fleeting, so I know I have to jump on them when I can. I also know I need to take a break, which means not working on the weekends anymore. Monday I come in and I'm refreshed and anxious to get back to doing creative things. I try to read books that have nothing to do with advertising at all. For example, I read Guns, Germs and Steel, and I'm reading the biography of Robert Moses. I think everyone just needs to challenge themselves and do things outside of themselves. Go see an opera. Go to a Nascar race. Do something you think you might hate.
