I just ran across this in an article- Who knows what the holding company headed by Martin Sorrell, WPP stands for?

As you know by now, Wire & Plastic Products. They have no advertising professional on their Board of Directors. Many bean counters. Is it any wonder advertsing is in a mess? Legend has it that David Ogilvy referrred to Martin Sorrell as an "odious little jerk. As Sorrell tells it, the Financial Times , in publishing that phrase, considerably toned down Ogilvy's last word. He took in good humor and put it in the next WPP annual report as Martin Sorell, OLJ.

My favorite is 3M, for name only. If talking about business startups, Sony totally owns the cake.

Copied from a Google search: "In 1986 Wire & Plastic Products became the innocuous-sounding WPP Group, ... In 1990 Advertising Age named WPP the top advertising agency in the world. ..."

The Wire and Plastic Products company I believe. Something like that. He bought the company with his own money, sold the assets and used the credit to buy up agencies.

Why, it stands for Wire & Plastic Products, of course. Apparently, they were originally a manufacturer of wire baskets. I'm a smartie!
