Jermajesty, Blanket, Tiger Lily, Kafka, Phoenix Chi, Poppy Honey, Romeo, Angel Iris -- Do any of these celebrity children names ring a bell? Well, choosing a child’s name is definitely paramount to an identity one has to live with for the rest of his or her life.

Similarly, choosing an appropriate brand name for a company reflects on what it stands for and there is no foolproof method on this personal and emotive subject.

Studies on What Works

There are, however, some studies on what may work in choosing the ‘right’ name, which act to shape the name of any brand and company.

  • Simple, easy to pronounce and spell (Apple, Shell, Elle, Gap)
  • Distinctive and exclusive (Virgin, Coke, 3M)
  • Vivid in imagery so that the mnemonic present stronger memory cues
  • For example, it is said that names beginning with ‘K’ are easier to remember: Kmart, Kia, Kenzo

It may be difficult to incorporate all aspects into choosing a brand name. However, there is evidence which suggest that if the mind has to work harder in order to remember a distinctive brand, it will be lodged in the brain for a longer period of time, as opposed to a familiar name, hence it would be easier working towards brand recognition.
