Getting My Foot Through the Door

Hello, everyone. I am a student at a state university, not an ad school. Not yet, anyway. It doesn't mean I can't be as talented or passionate about the industry. I often dream about it.

We all know about "getting your foot in the door". It's often mentioned to students and prospective employees alike. I've been on the hunt for what hundreds, if not thousands, of advertising students are ravenously seeking out — a summer internship.

Thankfully, I'm very fortunate to have quite a few contacts in the local market. And I've gained a few friends in New York, as well.

So far, the water has been turned on, but when I go to the well, it's dry. Either the respective agencies I've applied at are full or are not accepting interns this summer. (On a positive note, I heard back from one in NY, saying, if I'm interested in another date besides this summer, to let them know. You bet I let them know.) Also, optimistically, I haven't heard back from them all yet.

I want to learn so badly. I want to work so hard that my eyes bleed and I pass out from hunger. If that's what paying my dues requires, I'm in. I want a challenge. And I have the confidence in myself for the potential to do great work, while developing a sincere relationship with anyone around me. Apologies for the plethora of "I"'s.

May I have your advice? Besides going to ad school, paying über amounts of cash and have someone seek out work for me, what other actions can I take now?

Hopefully this information and your input will help myself and any others who may have the same issue.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers, Joel

Instead of discussing feet, people ask me----Who is your Vice President going to be, people keep asking me?----- Everywhere I go, I’m starting to hear, we want John Q. Public, we want John Q. Public, we want John Q. Public, we want John Q. Public… to be our second Buddy. We want John Q. Public to be our next Vice President of the USA. The people have spoken. Who am I to not listen to what the people want and need? Give a truth voice to the people, vote for John Q. Public as your #2 Buddy! (I smell a running partner.)

Joel, your work for the WWF is wonderful. It is as good as, if not better than what 99.99% of the professionals WITH jobs could ever hope to do, but aren't. Keep that up, make everything you do be on that same level, and... people will be knocking on your door.

Rent "Risky Business" and get yourself some Za and a drink...and watch it...uninterrupted. Honestly I like the WWF one, great copy...Says a lot without a lot saying it. The rest of it...needs work. I have some ideas if you're game. Then again, I'm a student too...so what do I know of Copy...

Right now it is, yeah. What do you think of the work?

Joel, I have to ask...is that your best stuff at your website? You need to watch THIS movie... /www.youtube.com/v/ilaUV... name="wmode" value="transparent">

There's plenty of small agencies in St. Louis that could use some slave labor. But here's another thought. Since it sounds like you've made a bunch of connections already. Could you perhaps start your own internship...ok, here's what I'm thinking. If the people you know are gracious enough to maybe mentor you a little, spend an hour with you every two weeks or so (take them out to lunch) to give you feedback on your book pieces--and you take their feedback and make your work better and better--by the end of the summer you'd have a better portfolio to show for it...instead of just some great photos with advertising people at those summer BBQ parties. Right now what's in your book is as important as your drive to work hard. Sorry to say, but at the end of the day, you have to be able to prove you're worth hiring...and that starts with your portfolio. Good luck with your foot. It's a tough industry but well worth the price of admission.

So you mean a commercial with a lot of copy? Ian Riechenthal, an ACD/Writer who was at Chiat NY and is now an ECD at Y&R, came up with the Skittles spots.

This ad from W+K tells about the product in a very unique and engaging way.

Those are nice...but I'm talking about from a copywriters standpoint...That is what you want to do...right?

Oh, html... and user error. Michael, are we able to edit?

Right now, this is my favorite commercial:
Here's>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEsqE...
one that isn't a commercial by definition, but it has had a profound effect on millions:

David Droga has been doing is pretty awesome, like the "Tap Project" or the upcoming "Million" project. I really like non-profit work, but Fortune 500 companies can make a huge impact on society too.

Point me to a commercial that really hits you...but don't tell me why, Let me see if our intentions are in the same ballpark. Move me... By proxy...

TJ: Sorry, I misread her question. I read it as her saying she mostly hears whining. What do I want to do? I want to make the closest connection with people that has ever been made, through whichever medium or media works best, even if it doesn't exist yet, and build the blueprint which makes the relationship last for a billion years.
The Space Shuttle program retires in 2010; after that, we'll be using rockets. Maybe you can light the last one into space. It would be awesome.

JJ...you're dodging the question, Like Olivia asked..."What do you want to do"? Me?...I want to be the first person to EVER light off the Space Shuttle...by hand. (Wouldn't that make a great ad for something?)

Seems we all have TJ on the brain today.
I'm doing my best to build connections into relationships. I know people don't like to be used. You know, "do unto others...". I WILL do whatever it takes, Olivia.
Are you referring to me saying I'm not going to take the advice given? I've applied at smaller agencies. And I'm waiting a few days before I call them back. The same goes for larger agencies.
Thank you very much for your advice.

Olivia?...was that intellectual "itinerary" meant for me or JJ? (but is quite understandable if you have "TJ" on the brain.) *BIG Business-wink accompanied by two thumbs up...held closely to my face* Image and video hosting by TinyPic

So, TJ, what exactly are you looking for? Every piece of advice that has been offered has been met with a proverbial "I don't wanna" or "I already have" or "Yea, I've heard that already". All of these suggestions have been made because they work. If you've already done it, and it didn't work, try again. Because, this business isn't just about selling, producing, and building relationships... people who are good at it don't just know how to do those things - they know how to manipulate the situation to make themselves look great. Otherwise known as marketing.

List of good pieces of advice as I've learned them:
1. Don't let different opinions deter you from your goal.
2. Meet positive energy with positive energy. Meet negative energy with positive energy.
3. Never lose sight of your goals.
4. Take No for an answer, and figure out how to turn it into a yes.
5. don't be intimidated

Apologies. I meant John Q Public.

TJ: The business is about selling, producing and building relationships. Even now, I'm branding myself. Why did you ask me the question? I know I have what it takes to go far, because I will do whatever it takes to stay ahead of everyone else.

What happens once you get your foot in the door? Then what, Joel? Do you have what it takes? Can you talk someone into doing what you want? Can do you a Buddy Friendly on them? If not, don't knock.

LOVE THEM, TJ. Makes for GREAT conversations with my kids. :)

A man of Ethics...OK. I applaud that personal rigidity of character. Are those ethics for sale? Tell you what, Joel... Here are some of the newest safe for work "expletives" as not to offend your principles... these are HOT off the street too... "Fooging"...As in "I'm not TOUCHING that fooging thing...because LORD knows WHERE it's been?" "Futch"...As in "What the futch were you thinking...I TOLD you Karen Carpenter was the wrong soundtrack for that restaurant's dinner music". This way you stay safely within the comfy confines of your moral comp(_*_) (<----compass, get it?)...yet you can still come off as street smart and alley savvy.

I don't like to curse, plain and simple.
Tuesday, March 25, 2008. 07:47PM by TJ Swafford
Why?...Are you an Alter Boy? You know...for almost 50 years Mother Teresa doubted the very existence of God...I'd like to think her "moral standards" were a bit above yours. There is a certain level of honor among thieves that even transcends the highest ones.
Tuesday, March 25, 2008. 04:10PM by Joel Jackson
Candidly, I'll say it's not my style; because of my pretty high moral standards, I don't talk that way.

Exquisitely noted, Olivia... Image and video hosting by TinyPic I need to keep an eye out for you more.

"Putting my foot up your ass" would have garnered a LOT more attention.
