Has anyone else noticed that 76 gas stations are a little redder than normal? The orange ball, their logo for 40+ years, has changed with little noise. Did someone mess up with the printer? Why would 76 change it's very recognizable color for its millions of gas stations, to such a popular gas station color, without doing much else to the look and feel of their retail or marketing. Was orange offensive to some emerging market? Am I missing something?

(oh, and speaking of new new, I love how VW is approaching the rice rocket crowd in the US. Were any Germans offended with the work?)

I was originally writing an embittered tirade exploring the possible variants which could contribute to such a seemingly pointless and poorly thought-out inconsistency in rebranding. Well, it seems that there is a major conflict of interest regarding the new 76 identity and logo and the ol' familiar association with the original 76 orange sphere and blue logo: http://www.petitiononline.com/76ball... I'm #1496. Power to the people!

Uniting 3 brands is usually a diluted effort. I'm not the expert on the subject - but you know that some hotshot at the company wanted to bring a fresh new face to it and so they probably hired some expensive designer to fix it and he came up with "let's make it red". Very noticeable. I hate it when icon imagery ends up retired in a text book... but hey it happens. PS. Go sign the petition "Save Ray's Balls"(see link above)

The fact of the matter is that VW car's quality is not up to par. No matter how great the TV spots are, the product's quality doesn't live up to it.

If you type in 76.com, it will redirect you to a site shared with Phillips 66 and Conoco. The color seems to be part of an effort to unite the 3 brands, as they are all using a similar red.

since i am a car-free traveler, gas stations are not a part of my life. i am however intereseted in how much they have actually changed the color. i mean is it really THAT noticeable? i have always liked the 76 orange. maybe they want to come up with a new jingle and they couldn't rhyme with orange so the sneaky transition begins. and i have got to say that i giggle everytime my german homey does the VW gang sign.
