"We would like to meet you in person and 'test' you for a day to make a decision. - Cool?"

Those are his exact words to my email I sent this morning, which was a quotation for working onsite. It was pretty high. I charged him separately for the research, one sales letter draft, one email draft, and trasportation expenses (either a car rental or train).

I'm not even sure if he is considering my offer or just wants to slam me when I arrive in San Diego. The problem is transportation and I can't stress it enough. MY CAR WON'T MAKE IT TO SAN DIEGO! IT'S A PIECE OF SHIT!

Should I just bluntly tell the guy this? Any other thoughts? Anyone? Bueller???

At the moment, I am researching trains to take me to my destination. If its feasible to travel via train, I would consider visiting.

WWOPFD? (What would other professional freelancers do?)

Definitely do it. Rent that car. A $35 investment is totally worth a decent gig. And... again... it'll bring more work.

Yeah, I say do the day trial. It's just a day. What else are you doing that day? :)

Ask me him to come to Orange County. Take him to Disneyland. Make him forgot about work. Then, bill him.

To me the guy sounds like he's being reasonable. He wants to make sure you're who you say you are and you'll do the work. I would: 1. Rent a car for $35/day 2. Get half your fees up front, half on delivery. Or 1/3 up front, 1/3 on revision, 1/3 on delivery. Either way, don't freak out. It's always a good thing when someone wants to pay us for our work/talent.
