just wrote a new book on advertising called, KNOCK THE HUSTLE: How to save your job and your life from Corporate America.

It's packed with all kinds of great stories about the ad world--crazy clients and bosses, brand stategies that worked and failed, consumer trends and insights and much more.

there's a whole chapter on new biz presentations (i've done a few in my time). check it out when you can:

thanks for the response... well put. one of the many problems that "urban marketing" reflects is that the most sensationalized and dangerous and degrading images of black folks aren't as marketable or as entertaining as the diversity that you speak of... The bigger question is why is a black kid-as-thug/hoodlum so much more interesting and accepting to the masses than a black-kid-as-doctor/skateboarder/eve... human being... and the saga continues. thanks again for the cool words. and for what it's worth, I worked on Sprite for a minute, so I'm guilty, too.

I read some of your excerpts and I thought it was well written. To be honest, when I saw the three posts in a row I was expecting it to suck. Usually people use hype to overcome ability, but I didn't get that all when I read your excerpts.

I have worked with Branchout, an "urban marketing" company so I have some experience in that regard. I do have to admit "black" advertising as a concept eludes me. Blacks are as diverse as anyone else, they are cowboys, teachers, lawyers, gangsters.. rich, poor and mostly in between like the rest of us. What worries me on a larger scale is "urban marketing" defining how young people are supposed to act. It's negative, defeatist and narrow. It's a big world and I hate to see young people stuffed into little marketing compartments. I did my part to perpetuate it by working on Footaction, Nike and Ace Cash Express so it's not like I'm pointing fingers. It just concerns me as an overall trend. I'm rambling now, good luck with your book.

Kev, um... you're right. I guess i should give you something first.... how's free excerpts? I did pay a couple folks to read it and they dug it, but then i really couldn't really on their endorsement because after all, I'd paid them...

I don't think anything, other than I'm not going to buy the book, until you give me something. Why should I go buy the book on your word? Dude, if you want me to read it, give me a reason to read it. Right now, you're just talking. Give me something, baby.
