Although they have recently been criticized a sell-outs by some for their affiliation with Apple's iPod, U2 continues to stay ahead of the consumer curve with innovative marketing and fresh ideas. [And BTW: their affiliation with Apple was a direct retaliation against the recording industry’s slow movement to embrace [and capitalize on] digital technology]

A Reuters news story reported that “Irish rockstar Bono brought traffic to a standstill at the heart of New York on Monday, blasting out songs from U2's latest album as the band cruised down Broadway on a flatbed truck.

Office workers on their lunch-breaks whipped out their camera phones to catch the surprise appearance by the band whose album "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" is released in Britain on Monday and in the United States on Tuesday.

The stunt was filmed for the video of the forthcoming single "All Because of You" and the band was due to make another free appearance in Brooklyn later in the day. “

As I write this, I can actually see them from my office window right now. They set up shop at noon. The press release came out at 1:30. Now there must be a thousand people who have treked over to DUMBO via the bridge, through water taxi and by car to get a glimpse of the band. What a great example of buzz marketing. Like them or not, you must admit they're not about to let their "big band" status fade anytime soon....

I first got a phonecall at noon that they were doing this when they were by that mexican place on 7th Avenue. Then they came down Varick Street, and every agency in the area emptied their offices onto the street. I, of course, was on deadline, frantically trying to find creatives...who, of course, forgot about the deadline when they heard U2 was on the corner. I hate having to be the responsible one sometimes.

I personally think U2 is responsible for peace in Ireland. Or have we forgotten they were at war already. Sunday bloody Sunday

my first stadium concert was U2 at Giants Stadium in 1986. Although I wouldn't buy an album from them today. I'm not a fan, but I will say it probably contributed to Apple's stock and new forecast... Now if Apple can get their act together and release the next "i" device with the same kind of track record...

I was once in an elevator with Bono when he was running for office in Ireland. I asked him why he was doing it and he said because if he was going to bitch he might as well see if he could change things. He served one term and decided to leave it to the politicians siting it was harder than he thought it was going to be. He seems to be the kind of person that does stuff. Sell out, go anti music, help famine victems, do a commercial. He does what he likes and admits when he is wrong. I respect that.

I love the fact that they did this--they were arrested many years ago for having an impromtu concert on a rooftop. But as a punk, they sold out years and years ago and many times over. Well before they did an Apple ad--which in my opinion actually makes them more redeemable because of the anti music industry stance it takes.
