Words or not and who decides?

I have always been fascinated with not only the meaning of words, vocabulary in general, but the simple notion that at some point in time someone had to create a word and decide what its meaning is. This seems to have been stretched to the very limits in modern day.

For those of you, who are not following me, allow me to mention an example.

Take Bling, or as commonly used BLING BLING as a case in point. According to this article from MTV, Click to Open Web Page this was “coined by New Orleans rap family Cash Money Millionaires back in the late '90s and started gaining national awareness with a song titled "Bling Bling" by Cash Money artist BG.” Is this really a word? Well apparently, now it is.

Another example, and one that particularly bugs me, is irregardless vs regardless. I used to be told all the time that irregardless was not a word. I finally gave up using it just so as not to hear people, college grads mostly, telling me that. Well according to Merriam…it is a word and has legitimate use. Click to Open Web Page

On to what I believe to be words that I most humbly have coined. Way back in the 1999 when I was but a mere upstart in the web business, I started using the following words. Clients immediately got what they meant and some even asked if they may use them. I use these in my documents to this day and although I don’t make a big deal of it, they sure seem like valid “words” to me.

The words:

Contentification, contentify, contentified : The act of adding content.

Usage : If quote 2 is selected, a template ready for contentification by (insert client name here) will be provided.

Templification, templify, templified : The act of turning raw files into a reusable template.

Usage : Once the mock ups have been approved we will templify them. Your files have been templified. I have already begun the templification process.

I am no professor; I have twelve years of schooling, and can not spell to save my life. I do believe however that if BLING BLING can be added to the dictionary, then by gosh by golly, these words should be added as well.

Will they be? I have no idea and frankly I don’t really care. I will continue to use them regardless. I am however curious to hear the feedback of this learned bunch. :) Oh, and this would be my first blog (word?). Woot! (word?) LOL

You've already added them. The trick to getting words to stick is to get them into as many consciousnesses as possible - I remember when the term "winningest" first made an appearance. Drove me crazy; now you can't look at the sports section in your local rag without seeing it a dozen times or so. BTW, coining words is a great hobby. I have a whole slew of 'em. My current favourite is "Misanthrophile" - which is my current self-descriptor. Either 'one who hates people lovers' or 'one who loves people haters. It's fun to watch folks think about it.
