___________________________________________________________ From: THE DEPT. of HYPE ___________________________________________________________ MAY 2005 AUSTIN, TEXAS Let's get this out of the way: beside Marc English's computer monitor is a quote from the John Ford western about an east-coast 'pilgrim' (Jimmy Stewart) who heads out west to make a name for himself fighting the good fight, where he crosses paths with a local (John Wayne) and both their lives change forever. The quote reads "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." That said, we will now continue with our previously scheduled missive from the Dept of Hype... The June issue of HOW magazine hypes the release of the new book "Inspirability" with an article on four of the design studios/designers featured in the book - Adams/Morioka of Los Angeles, Luba Lukova and Chip Kidd of New York City, and Marc English Design of Austin. Touted as a "must-have" book which includes "Interviews with 40 design luminaries" the teaser for the HOW article asks "What inspires design superstars?" the book feature some of English's fave living U.S. designers. Included are his amigos Stefan Sagmeister (package design for Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Rolling Stones), Paula Scherr (the CitiBank logo and posters for the Publik Theatre in New York) and Chip Kidd (designer of every brilliant book cover to come down the pike) as well as personal hero Milton Glaser (the iconic 1966 Bob Dylan poster; the "I Heart NY" logo). In 1986, as a student at Massachusetts College of Art, Glaser autographed a poster English designed for an exhibition of the renown designer's work. English claims a small degree of luminosity, no superstardom, and much guilt by association. On "Inspirablity" English suggests the key words are "spirit" and "able." "The only way to inspire others is to help others realize their own spirits - the root of 'inspire' - and in turn, the spirits of each project they undertake and those of the clients they work for. To find and bring out the heart, the soul, the spirit of any project has more lasting value than any word like 'brand' or 'strategy.' And to be 'able' to do that means work. Most 'talent' that I've seen has required a LOT of hard work." "Inspirablity" author Pash says "I chose Marc English for my book for three reasons: He's a fantastic designer. He's a great friend. And he is one of the most fascinating, life-affirming, adventurous, inventive, and passionate people I have ever known. And I know a LOT of people. In a world of clever, free-spirited, intelligent designers, Reverend English's strong, unique voice always rises above the din. There is only one Design Shaman." No stranger to "best of" lists, in 1998 the studio of Marc English Design found themselves one of two Texas firms, and the only Austin one to be included in "Graphic Design America 2: The Work of Many of the Best and Brightest Design Firms From Across the United States," a survey of 40 top shops across the country. And in the recent 20th anniversary issue of HOW magazine, they listed English as one of "20 Designers We'd Like to Have a Beer With." English swears he has neither flirted or nor slept with any of the HOW staff or writers, and has only met the editor once. Since the studio's inception in 1993, the work of Marc English Design has found itself being honored by the leading industry journals in the the United States and has been included in collections here and abroad. Marc English Design works with a variety of clients, some well known, others less so, and their projects are equally varied. English's lectures on design have become popular and he speaks regularly across the U.S. and beyond its borders. And coming full circle, while 'superstars' and 'luminaries' may be able to shed light on occasion, remember that underneath there is a great big ball of hot gas that can burn out at any time. Or that 'truth' and 'legend' get tossed about readily, but spirit has a way of standing the test of time. And the truth of the matter is that news releases are not sent out to give ourselves pats on the back, but to drum up business. Even Jimmy Stewart, playing the lawyer and the man who shot Liberty Valance, sought clients. The Dept. of Hype will endeavor to keep you informed.
