Yet again a big business takes out a smaller competitor.

Players: Create Magazine Jupiter Media

Jupiter Media strikes again. Latest takeover of a competitor involves Create Magazine. News is that Jupiter bought Create Magazine and shuttered it. Create Magazine not only had a magazine but an awesome network called the Create Network that connected creatives all over the world. It gave them a place to post portfolios, news, events, blogs, and chat about things going on in their worlds. Now with Jupiter, subscribers are suppose to get their magazine Dynamic Graphics, but not until the Sep/Oct issue, which means that they are going to miss at least two months of information, news that Create provided.

Now all of the Create Network members are left high and dry to try and figure out what's going on. Jupiter port the createnetwork site over to one of their sites and took a couple days to put up something about what was going on. Like they think creatives aren't going to care that they lost a valuable source of information, news, etc.

For those that don't know what Create Magazine was let me give you a little background. Create Magazine was started back in 2001 by Jerry Brown and it was covering the Central Florida creative community. After two years he decided to launch a South Florida version. Then in 2005 (with backing) Create Magazine went national and into 20 different creative markets all over the US, including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas/Ft Worth, Denver, Washington DC and others. After a couple years of success Create decided to go regional to help incorporate some of the smaller creative communities that weren't getting the recognition that they deserved. On top of that Create went from a quarterly magazine to a bi-monthly to be able to get more information out to readers sooner and that's where the Create Network was born.

Create will live on... The Create Awards (www.thecreateawards.com) and Create Chaos (www.createchaos.com) are still both up and running. Check them out and be sure to give them your support.

I guess it just shows that the big boys were scared of an up and coming company whose following was going in leaps and bounds and branching out in other directions to help bring the creative community together. It's kind of sad that just when something gets going that good for the community someone has to squash it.

Now that we've heard the PR BS, what really happened? What the real reason, huh?

That's disappointing. I really liked the magazine. The network was a nice try but clearly created by neophytes who didn't understand anything about UI our building a true community - I felt like I was getting panic attacks trying to navigate it. I only wish we had that kind of monetary resource to build something so complex. ;)

Shuttering happens. What a waste. Phillip, why not send emails to your creative audience to send them to Adholes so they have a place to post portfolios, news, events, blogs, and chat about things going on in their worlds. It's us or Jupiter Media. Adholes is better.
