Co-Creation and Social Network Fatigue

Everyone I know is talking about co-creation - having an open dialogue between consumers and brands. Some brands are doing it better than others, but at a certain point there will be so many brands jumping on the bandwagon and likely doing a half-assed job of it that consumers will again be turned off by all the clutter.

Social networking is a big part of this because now brands are trying to integrate themselves with fan pages on Facebook and profiles on MySpace, or worse idea, trying to start their very own. (Unless you do it like Nike has, please don't bother.)

So at what point are we going to tire of the friend requests, the contests to come up with slogans or submit videos to corporations. Will it always be worth a nominal prize to spend our time making our own Mentos geyser video?

What happens when people are sick and tired of "co-creation" or realize that for the most part, companies are still just not listening.

The next big thing is the one right after this one. There will always be a next big thing, until the last big thing ruins everything.

The only things in this world that we can count on is death, taxes, the passing of time and change...and eventually what we consider branding through social networking will become as common and ordinary as commericals and magagzine ads are now, I don't think it will go away, I think it begin to blend in with the rest of the woodwork. And with everything, change is inevitable so, eventually someone will come along and improve upon the idea and they will be considered smart, ahead of their time, etc...Whether we like it or not, the world is changing and when I can post something and 5 minutes later have reaction from across the globe, nothing is untouchable or impossible, just vulnerable to the one thing that none of can control and all of us measure our entire existences upon, time, time and change.

Michael is right. It will pass. I have clients who want to make social networking sites for the most obscure products. Not every product/component/ingredient has something to gain or offer, but people like to jump on bandwagons without thinking it through.

It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence to be ever in view, which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "AND THIS TOO, SHALL PASS." How much it expresses! How chastening it is in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction! How well it describes passing fancy, fad, and trend!
