The whole key to buzz marketing is for the target to not know they're being buzzed. It's a subtle manipulation that's difficult to craft. So when Slate's Seth Stevenson received several emails at the same time wondering where they could get a Burger King mask for Halloween, and coincidentally, Burger King just happened to have launched a website selling the mask for $9.

The article poses some interesting questions such as whether or not this type of marketing is ethical, whether or not Seth has been duped, since he did indeed write about the masks anyway (and now, so am I...) And another intersting tidbit. That despite the success of the Subservient Chicken campaign, McDonalds' web traffic increased more during the campaign and there was some consumer backlash once they found out it was a promo for Burger King.

This Halloween, just like the last, I’m going as the Invisible Man. See you at the party.

Shaun, with all your traveling you've had the career of a lawn gnome :)

It's a pop culture thing. I'm going as a lawn gnome. Travelocity influenced? Perhaps. All the cool guys and gals dressed in Kill Bill outfits last year. Disney has been doing it for a while. The M&M guys. Haloween has always been fair game for candy makers and entertainment properties. It's about time more brands realized the potential of bringing your brand to live on this racy day.

Yes, Jessica. I'll admit it, the email you got saying I'm amazing was from one of my fake accounts.

haha amazing. Totally a plant. They've had those masks in the making for months and no one I know even knew about, nor do they find it interesting. The only reason I know is because we had a speaker from CP+B tell us they were going to be available for Halloween. haha. Are fake emails a new form of "guerilla marketing"???
