portfolio evaluation whiskey realizations disillusion moving forward

So - since I keep getting harped on to put content up on my site, I decided to use this time to evaluate and revise my portfolio (before I desperately need to send it out - as per a previous weblog). In this process, I have come to a personal conclusion - not one that I am particularly happy with, but an important one regardless. I am a much better graphic designer and photographer than I am an art director. How many times do we have to tell our clients, market your strengths, don't try to convince the world you are something else, they see through it. And how many of us (conciously, or un) ignore that same advice? This is not to say that we cannot aspire, or even bill ourselves above a current level in order to advance into better/different work to expand etc. Far from it, but how often do you do an honest evaluation about what you do well, enjoy most and can continue to really rock... I don't know if I got hung up on the title once it was first granted. Or if I have a built up notion of the AD's role or what... but it is not what I do best, and not what even what I want to do best. So, better armed, better prepared, and with a more cohesive book - which I do intend to upload, honest. I actually feel like I can win the clients I really want again...as their designer, not a half-hearted, half-assed attempt at being their AD. Thanks for listening... now if you'll excuse me, I have a bottle of good irish whiskey calling my name (didn't realize the bottle would have an accent... makes sense I suppose). |
