why? thats the question, i want an answer to. why do AE's make life miserable? does it state in their job profile...must harass creatives. must keep rejecting lines. somebody please tell me.

i get a brief. i sit with my art director. we thrash out ideas. and i write copy. and the AE comes and trashes em.

and if she aint sure, she reads it to the client?!!!

wtf!

"no man...this line doesn't work. gimme some more headlines." "dont worry about the copy...we'll use the stuff the client gave us." "you can't write this way."

W T F!

suits. can't live with em. can't live without em (but we can try!)

:)

note: this is a rant. AE's worldwide, please dont make my life more hellish than it already is. your copy dude.

Don't let anyone stand in your way. Mars will be closer to Earth in August than it ever has in recorded history, and it will be like looking at a full moon. Try to keep that in mind next time you think it's a hassle. It's just someone. Who cares. I pattern my life after the Giant Sequoias...largest living things on earth...unstoppable growth, they even rely on fire...immortal...single mission...nothing stands in their way...don't let anyone get to you, not worth a blog. But I mean that in a good way. Rock on.

AE's are the same as creatives there are good ones and bad ones. Getting good creative through falls more on the client than the AE. Bad clients need to be trained and that takes time, you can't do it overnight. If AE's fell on their sword for every piece of copy they would be fired immediately. The only way to remedy the situation is to give the Ae's options and give them persuasive arguments as to which one is better, not just I'm the creative and i say So. If at all possible, develop a relationship with the client, let them be involved in the process, that way they understand why you ended up where you did. That being said, there are clients in agencies that are known as Cash Flow accounts, management knows that the creative opportunities are limited but where are you going to find the revenue to replace it?

Jeffrey, its funny you should put it in those terms. A good friend of mine and I had the same conversation. I think it is called "Stockholm Syndrome" when you start identifying with your captors. I have seen this most at larger shops for some reason.

I have a small business and am taking on a couple of account people so I have given that some thought. I don't want people working against me while working for me. But on the other hand if I do work that sucks, I do appreciate a truthful assessment.

In conclusion, AEs are like condoms, they are necessary but don't feel very good and you aren't supposed to flush them down the toilet.

I think that this problem is common when an AE begins to identify with and advocate for the client without maintaining the balance of representing the agency. Similar to a hostage identifying with their captor... to survive! The best AE is a mediator who helps navigate this relationship protecting the creative vision of the agency while representing client concerns. They usually get bumped upstairs and are then replaced by new staff with much less experience.
