Christmas ads have been starting earlier and earlier for a long time. It makes sense from a marketing standpoint considering people will have to buy smaller quantities over an extended period. The one retailer in the article who said that starting earlier so he doesn't have to discount as much is right on the mark. I used to work in retail and when items are out early, people tend to buy for fear it will be gone by Christmas. As Christmas nears, the idea is more that it will be cheaper if I wait until the last minute. In tough times, family holidays are all that much more important, but hopefully it will be about friends and family instead of stuff. Disclaimer: I am a sucker for all things Christmas.
