As a relative newcomer to Adholes, I am still trying to maneuver my way around and get a sense of the "mood" here. I currently have 1 friend, Buddy, who I beleive pulled a thorn from my paw at Soflow some time ago. Now, it's not that I don't want to have friends. I figure the more the merrier, especially if you're trying to come up with bail money at 3am. So I guess I have a multi purpose question which may help others as well:

Some of you invite everyone to be your friend. Others seem very selective. What type of criteria might one base asking someone to be their friend?

Is there a real value to having a thousand people in your friends list?

Do you just wait for someone to invite you or do you invite others?

Do you ever say no thanks to an invite?

What do you hope to get out of "friend" relationships?

Do you get birthday gifts and Xmas/ Hanukah/ Kwanza gifts for your friends?

Who put the ram in the rama lama ding dong?

In the real world, rarely do creative people have other creative people as friends. Why? Jealously, envy, paranoia, self interest...fueled by SELF-ESTEEM and INSECURITY ISSUES of creative people simultaneously existing side by side with their tremendous EGO, and need for attention. Take that reality to a virtual, simulated, artificial reality like social networks in cyber-space and what kind of rama lama ding dong do you end up with? Hmmmmmmm? Friendship works for me if it works for others. I can handle it, it others can. I learned along time ago about how much more important friendship is, compared to any aspect of the advertising business.

Well I just learned something. I am on several other social sites and they work on an invite and accept basis. I didn't realize how it worked here. I suppose I should read the directions. I've always thought of a friend as someone who would either pick me up from the airport or help me move. My avatar doesn't have any standards however and is happy to be friends with almost anyone.

Hi. Friends don't work on here like on MySpace or Friendster where friendship is 'mutual.' If I add you, you're added to my profile whether you like it or not. You can add me back, but you don't have to. It sort of eliminates that awkward obligatory "ok fine, I'll add you even though I have no idea who you are." I have a ton of friends since I own the site. I try to make a point to at least have one conversation with someone before I add them back. But everyone has their own set of standards. This is in general a problem with social networks. It's a new form of communicating that has no etiquette presidents. We know when the phone rings to say hello. What do we do when someone adds us as a friend on a social network?

"What type of criteria might one base asking someone to be their friend?"---They must be a friendly Buddy. "Is there a real value to having a thousand people in your friends list?"---Who knows. No one here has a thousand friends. When I'm president I'll let you know. "Do you ever say no thanks to an invite?"---I've been known to tell some Aholes to go fuck themselves. "What do you hope to get out of "friend" relationships?"---Votes. Money. Deals. Get laid. "Do you get birthday gifts and Xmas/ Hanukah/ Kwanza gifts for your friends?"---All the time. Most people here send cash, so it's an off the books transaction. "Who put the ram in the rama lama ding dong?"---Your mother.
