The unlimited capacity computer

All you can eat buffets are somewhat protected by the limits of our gastrointestinal system. Even a somewhat large person will not be able to make a huge dent in profits.

But what's with web hosts who claim unlimited storage and bandwidth? Who invented the limitless capacity computer and forgot to tell me?

Of course, these outfits are all shady. Certainly if you tried to upload 5 gig files all day they would cite the fine print that limits CPU usage on a server. Which is why anyone with a supposedly limitless account finds their account suspended if there's a sudden spike in traffic followed by being on the cover of Digg or, I don't know, being indicted.

It's expected in the ultra competitive internet storage market that plummeting costs and low barriers to entry allows a lot of unscrupulous people to the market.

But now Yahoo, in order to compete with Google's email service, which offers 3 gigs of space, is now offering an UNLIMITED email account. Great! I'm going make a nightly backup of my hard drive and email it to myself. That way if I want to reminisce about what my desktop looked like 4 years ago I can just pull up that email, download my drive and poke around.

I'm wondering if indeed there's a way to test just how unlimited it is, before, well, there's limits.

Have them put their unlimited computing power towards generating more votes for me in the 2008 presidential election. If they can do that, they're OK. If not, they're not.

Call their scam bluff, have them put their claim in writing, and then put them to the test.
