Cereal. It’s not just for breakfast anymore.

Several months ago I heard, with curiosity, of a new concept store called: Cereality. I just read a press release stating that the third store will open on June 27th [one already exists in Philadelphia and Arizona].

Cereality, in short is a Cereal Bar and Café – designed to make eating cereal outside of the home an “experience.”

From take-out containers of your favorite fruity grain to cereal bars to bakery items, snack mixes, granolas and smoothies; customers can get their own personalized cereal creations made-to-order by picking from over 34 cereals and 35 different toppings.

What a great idea to take the basic concept of a food, most commonly thought of and used during breakfast occasions [although we starving college students always knew the nutritional value of a bowl of fruit loops for dinner] and expand its usage, behavior and rituals to other times of the day.

Me thinks with a little brain power – this concept could quickly catch on. [breakfast pizza take-out anyone?]

'Special K' is touting their new vanilla-flavoured cereal as comfort food (these commercials are in Canada; not sure if they are in the States), and I eat cereal all the time as a snack so this is a good marketing area to explore. However, I don't think I would frequent a restaurant-type environment to quench my munchies, as I'd probably end up paying more for the experience than the sugary bowl is worth. It's like Starbucks - and I refuse to pay $6 for a coffee. On the cereal topic, I saw something weird on an excursion to the U.S. this weekend...Captain Crunch mixed with Doritos, pretzels and corn chips (along with candy-coated chocolate thingees) in a Munchie Mix. Weird!

Speaking of catching on - as I was walking to my office this morning, I noticed a salad bar place on Park Ave S has just introduced their "wild cereal bar" for breakfast. Go figure!

I heard of this - I think they may have even had a spotlight on the Food Network. I've always snacked on cereal - I only eat my cereal dry because of my milk and soggy food issues.

My boyfriend has had this idea for ages! We dubbed it The Spoon Spot.

It works even better when you sub-franchise a branded cereal bar area and add it to a starbucks. Ok, that was meant to be a snide remark, but it sounds a little too scary as it just might work. I need more sleep. Great post Noelle!

Taking advantage of this trend, I'm looking for investors for my southern restaurant---- Grits R Us- Grits, they're not for breakfast anymore. For you northern folks I have a complete presentation that explains the origin of grits. My signature item is going to be the Gritsicle- frozen grits on a stick in a variety of flavors. Yummy- coming soon to a strip mall near you.

I'm really happy to think of Mary Crosse being pouty. It's a very Maxim/FHM way of expressing herself that I couldn't have hoped she'd help me imagine, save now.

mmmm. i love cereal. for a long time, it was the only thing i knew how to cook (it's really easy - you just add milk!) and when i was a kid, i would wake up grumpy and ask my mom to make me a bowl of cereal, and she would go "Poof! You're a bowl of cereal!" and I would get very pouty.
